💻 Virtual Interview Tips

Technical Setup

  • Test your internet connection 24 hours before - have a backup plan (hotspot, different location)
  • Use a wired ethernet connection if possible for stability
  • Close all unnecessary applications and browser tabs
  • Test your camera and microphone with a friend beforehand
  • Have the interviewer's phone number in case of technical issues
  • Keep Zoom/Teams updated to the latest version
  • Use headphones with a built-in mic for better audio quality

Environment & Appearance

  • Choose a quiet, well-lit room with a plain background
  • Position your camera at eye level (use books to raise laptop if needed)
  • Ensure good lighting - natural light from front/side is best, avoid backlighting
  • Wear professional attire from head to toe (in case you need to stand up)
  • Remove distracting items from your background
  • Test your background - make sure it looks clean and professional on camera
  • Put a 'Do Not Disturb' sign on your door

During the Interview

  • Look at the camera, not the screen, to maintain 'eye contact'
  • Position notes off to the side of your camera (not directly below)
  • Sit up straight and use hand gestures naturally
  • Speak slightly slower and more clearly than usual
  • Wait a beat before responding to account for audio lag
  • Have water nearby (in a non-distracting container)
  • Keep a notepad visible for taking notes on their questions
  • Smile! It translates through the camera and shows enthusiasm

Pro Tips

  • Join 5-10 minutes early but wait in the lobby until your scheduled time
  • Have a printed copy of your CV/personal statement nearby for reference
  • Use the 'touch up appearance' feature sparingly - don't overdo it
  • Practice with Zoom's 'record' feature to see how you appear on camera
  • Have a backup device (phone/tablet) ready with the meeting link
  • Turn off notifications on all devices
